Artist Statement
The past few years I have seen a revival of the Black Female Consciousness, from the natural hair movement to the Black Girls Rock events. We are becoming more open about our personal experiences and more vocal about the abuse and exploitation our features take not only in the media, also in day-to-day life. I am no exception, having experienced first hand the invasion of personal space and a disregard of decency for my humanity. My goal is to help connect emotions with visuals to get the viewer to resonate either directly or indirectly with my experiences, as well as to educate those unaware of their role in the abuse. I chose to use photo collages because reality is stranger than fiction. I want to take the problem of shameless cultural appropriation and black female exploitation out of the fantasy realm and into reality where it belongs.
