Artist Statement

My brother and I work together to explore singularities in the perpetual cycle of creation, effect, and destruction of space and matter. Our works attempt a light-hearted depiction of experiences on any scale between the grand and ordinary. We are uniquely influenced by a lifetime of shared vision as twins.

Influences on our work are rooted in the art of the color field painters, and the science that contributed to the development of quantum mechanics. As a result, we are humbled by the inherent paradox of trying to represent a subject beyond the scope of our own perspective. Our compositions rarely utilize a fixed perspectives or horizon line, rather express multiple viewpoints. With our love of ideas about future worlds and dystopian visions, it seems like a natural path to take. We work in a physically active way and tend to design a work as if panning full circle to take in the full surrounding. We take full advantage of the natural unpredictability of the creation. We depend on music as part of the creative process and create electronic music in our spare time. Each undertaking is an effort to explore new ideas, techniques and letting the process creating a visual image evolve organically. Our favorite response to a work so far is “Have you ever wondered if you’re asking the right questions?”

The look of our work tends to have a saturated, texturized, layered look to it. A sense of depth is created by using several layers of paint using a palette knife and brayer to create texture in order for previous layers to “poke” through. Each painting has several layers of satin varnish in order to not only protect the painting but to “draw out” the previous layers.
